How do you calculate voltage variations across a ground grid?
Nilushka asks us: I’m interested in calculating the voltage variation of the soil, inside a mesh in a grounding grid. currently I have modeled a... Read More
According to my knowledge GPR provides information about the maximum potential that can happen under a faulty condition. But how can we find the potential distribution within the grid (i.e.in the soil enclosed by the grid) analytically?
Hi Pryianga, Thank you for your question regarding Ground Potential Rise distributions within a grounding grid; it is our pleasure to help. When you see... Read More
How do you calculate the step and touch voltages in the new substation (13,8/0,48kV)?
Hi Francisco, Thank you for your question regarding the calculation of step and touch voltages in a substation, it is our pleasure to help. Properly... Read More
What is significance of modeling of soil as two layered or multilayered soil?
Hi Vyas, Thank you for your question regarding multi-layered soil, it is our pleasure to help. Rarely does one ever find soil conditions that could... Read More
Our Reading of Earth Resistivity is Coming Avarage 2800 Ohm Meter ? We are Designing 11/33 KV Co-generation Substation. What are the next steps required for designing Earth Mat for 70 X 33 Meter Area of Switch Yard?

Can grounding mat be monitored by SCADA so its results produces notification by alarm? An example is gound wire is cut or stolen.
Hi Mo Faraj, Thank you for your question regarding using a SCADA system and monitoring copper ground wires for theft, it is our pleasure to... Read More
We are developing computer program to analyze substation grounding system performance. We have referred to CDEGS as recommended by you, also we have gone through ETAP GGS module and CYMGRD. In IEEE 80 only uniform soil resistivity modelling is given. Would you please throw some light on Two layer soil modelling? How it affects grounding system performance?
Hi Atulkumar, Thank you for your question regarding the difference between GPR events modeled in single layer soils, versus those modeled in multilayer configurations. It... Read More
We use a GPR calculator for figuring the 300V point, however the soil type input is vague: input of 1, 2 or 3 (100/20, 100 and 100/1000 ohm-meters respectively). We do not receive this exact info from the power company and we are trying to understand how to figure based on their ground resistivity readings.
Hi Todd, Thank you for your question regarding GPR Calculators, it is our pleasure to help. Ground Potential Rise (GPR) calculators are used to help... Read More
We are in process of doing earthing calculation for a small project with 11/.415kV distribution using ETAP software. The output report of ETAP says ”The calculated surface potential is greater than GPR probably because of line current source assumption”. Please help us to understand about this and how to come out of this issue. We have modelled the Earthing in 2 layers.
Hi Arul, Thank you for your question, it is our pleasure to assist you. We contacted ETAP last week and we have yet to get... Read More
